Free job coaching course for paraeducators
Prairie Lakes AEA is pleased to announce that again this year, paraeducators will have the opportunity to participate in a FREE Job Coaching course. PLAEA Transition Coordinators, Diane Nelsen and Elaine Cook, have teamed with Iowa Community Providers to offer this training.
With the emphasis on job development for students through the Work Investment Opportunity Act (WIOA), as well as, the emphasis on preparing our students to be college and career ready, this can be an important piece of your student’s transition planning. Keeping in mind districts’ budgets and needs, this could be a win-win for everyone involved. This is an EXCELLENT way to provide training for your paraeducators in your own back yard. The skills that a paraeducator needs in a classroom are vastly different from those needed to appropriately supervise a student on a job site. This class will help provide those skills.
A required day of training is planned from 9 a.mm.-3 p.m. Sept. 14 at the PLAEA office in Pocahontas. This initial day will include getting participants enrolled in the program, a review of program expectations, and assistance in navigating the online course work. Each participant will need to bring a school laptop with them for the training. Participants will be expected to complete the remainder of the course on their own.
As a district, you may want to build time into their schedules to complete course work. You might consider enabling pareducators to utilize in-service and/or early out days for pay as they complete this class. It takes approximately 25 additional hours. Each participant will earn a certificate upon successfully finishing this online course.
Because of our state's budget cuts, it is likely that this will be the last year this course will be available at no cost. We need to know the names of the particpating paraeducators no later than Sept. 8th. Please register them at this link: Job Coaching for High School Paraeducators. A minimum of 10 participants is required in order to hold this class.
