Upcoming options: State Science Modules 1, 2 & 3
After the Iowa Core Science Standards were adopted by the State Board of Education in August 2015, all of Iowa's AEAs began offering Module 1, an overview of Iowa’s new science standards, in anticipation of expected implementation in August 2018. Over the past two years, there have been more than 25 workshops in PLAEA for over 600 teachers through area-wide offerings and in-district trainings. All workshops have been and will be advertised in this online newsletter.
For teachers, administrators, or instructional coaches needing the introductory Module 1, this is now offered as a free state-wide online overview, available through AEA PD Online: https://training.
Once you have an account and are into the AEA Online system, go to the catalog and search for “science standards”. It is estimated to take 3 hours to complete this online version, and it is recommended to work through it collaboratively. Attending an overview workshop or completing the online module is a prerequisite for the learning in Module 2 so participants feel confident in their foundational understanding of the structure and intent of the standards.
For teachers, administrators or instructional coaches needing Module 2:
Science Module 2 will be offered at the Pocahontas AEA from 8:30-3:30 on February 23 & 27. Day 1 of this workshop is focused on understanding what 3-dimensional teaching and learning of the standards looks like in a science classroom. Day 2 is centered on unpacking science standards. Participants are encouraged to complete Module 1 online prior to attending.

Module 3 is focused on science assessment and was first offered this fall. The two-day Module 3 will be repeated for teachers, coaches and administrators at any grade level on March 15 & April 5 from 8:30-3:30 in the Pocahontas AEA.
